What should you do, if it is no longer possible to avoid a collision with wild animals?

If a collision with a wild animal can’t be avoided, the safest rule is: brake hard in a straight line and keep your vehicle stable.

Braking as hard as possible is correct because it reduces your speed and therefore the impact energy. That lowers the risk of serious injury and can sometimes still prevent the collision if the animal moves away at the last moment.

Maintaining your direction of travel is correct because sudden swerving is usually more dangerous than hitting the animal. An evasive maneuver can make you lose control, skid into oncoming traffic, hit a tree, or roll over. Especially at higher speeds, on wet roads, or when you brake while steering, the risk of leaving your lane is high.

“Always swerve” is wrong because there is no “always” rule for evasion. You only evade if you can clearly do it safely without endangering others. In many real situations you cannot guarantee that, and a swerve can create a much worse crash than the animal collision.

Rule of thumb for similar questions: straight-line emergency braking + stay in your lane; do not swerve reflexively. If time allows, also dip headlights and honk briefly to alert the animal, and after the incident secure the scene and call the police (injured animals should not be approached).
